Stanjel castle

The castles is a part of a fortified village of Stanjel, situated on a hill top. The wall around the houses was erected in the 15th century, to defend the Stanjel against the Turkish rides. This is one of the most interesting villages in the Karst (Kras) region, situated on a wine route.

Attractions
The castle houses a gallery of paintings by Lojze Spacal. There is a luxurious castle restaurant in the inner castle yard, with a selection of Terran wines from the region. The region is also famous for Kraski prsut, a prosciutto-like dried ham.

How to get there
The village is best accessible from Sezana. A small serpentine road connects Stanjel off the main motorway from Postojna to Koper, in direction of Nova Gorica. Stanjel has a railway station with a train running between Nova Gorica and Villa Opicina (Trieste) in Italy.
