Skofja Loka castle

Skofja LokaSkofja Loka is a medieval town near to Ljubljana and Kranj. The history of the town started in 973 when a German emperor Oton II given this territory as a gift to bishops Freising. The town got municipal rights in 1274.

The castle was built in early 14th century along with the town fortifications. The castle was badly damaged in 1511 by an earthquake and subsequently rebuilt by bishop Filip.

In spite of many Turk rides, fires and earthquakes, Skofja Loka is nowadays the most preserved medieval town in Slovenia; and is a recommended daily trip from Ljubljana.

There is an extensive museum housed in the castle building. Various events such as Medieval days take place in Skofja Loka annually. The castle offers guided tours for groups.

Monday 10.00 - 16.00 , Tuesday - Friday 10.00 - 18.00, Saturday and Sunday 10.00 - 19.00.

How to get there
The castle dominated a town and is easily accessible from the main square. A bus runs regularly during the day from Ljubljana bus station to Skofja Loka every hour. The journey with bus takes some 40 minutes and the ticket costs 3 Euros. Don't take a train, because a train station in Skofja Loka is a 30 min walk from the castle.
