Castles in The Netherlands
The Netherlands being the most densely populated country of the world, is in its center almost totally urbanized. The monuments of its rich history stand everywhere, often still in everyday use, as centuries before. The castles of the Netherlands, which were in the Middle Ages defensive structures with thick, up to 1,5 meter walls, changed during the Renaissance into residences. Often their
medieval
character has been imitated, to pretend that the owner’s family past had reached far beyond the times of travel and trade. Many of these castle residences still stand; they are now museums, hotels, restaurants. To enter their cold quiet walls will give the pleasure of moving back in time.
